Central Park Zoo is a zoo set in the middle of Central Park in New York City. It is the former home of Alex, Marty, Gloria, Melman, Mason & Phil, the penguins, Savio and Lulu.

History

Situated in Central Park, the Central Park Zoo was host to a number of various animals from around the world, with its chief attraction being the famed Alex the lion, who had been rescued as a cub from being adrift in a crate at sea. Having seen a number of various animals through the years, the Central Park Zoo was ultimately emptied of a zebra named Marty, along with Alex, Gloria the hippopotamus, Melman the giraffe, two chimpanzees and four penguins. These animals that escaped were captured and packed up into crates and sent to a wildlife reserve in Africa. En route to the reserve, however, the ship carrying the crates was hijacked by the penguins, who managed to escape and pilot the ship and all its creatures, excluding Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria, whose crates had fallen out of the ship, to Antarctica, where the penguins would be free. The crew was bound up and sent on a slow lifeboat to China.

Later, the ship was reported missing and former fans of Alex the lion returned to the zoo to leave flowers and light candles in mourning for the loss of their favorite lion, whom they all believed to have perished.

Long afterward, Alex returned to the zoo, along with Gloria, Marty, Melman, and a lemur named King Julien, only to be captured by Monaco Animal Control Capitaine Chantel Dubois, and returned to their cages, except Julien, who had managed to escape and send for help. Alex and the others were broken out of the zoo, though not before suffering a chase by Dubois, who had broken through the exhibit containing the cobras and attempted to kill Alex for his head, which she would mount on her wall as a trophy. Alex and the others managed to escape, however, and Dubois ended up within the cage that Alex was kept in.

Exhibits

Throughout the zoo were a number of animal displays, which accommodated various species. The exhibits all were tailored to fit the needs of the animals that resided within them.

Pens

The pens were issued to so many larger animals such as Alex, Marty and most of the mammals, as well as the ostriches and Roger. Variable in size depending on their residents, the pens had different traits.

Lion Pen/Lemur Habitat/Kangaroo Pen(???)

During the days in which Alex the South African lion Penguins of Madagascar was the star attraction of the Central Park Zoo, the lion pen was built especially for him. Sealed off by brick walls, the lion pen had a large rock within it that Alex was famous for climbing on and roaring for zoo patrons’ entertainment. Along with this, the lion pen also had a heat lamp under which Alex would sleep at night. The lion pen was set lower than the zebra, hippopotamus and giraffe pens and walled off by brick walls and fences. Atop the rock was a small fan that could be activated with the press of a button, made for Alex to wave his mane with. On either side of the pen were two small sparkler cannons that would set off sparklers when Alex roared. After Alex was shipped out of Central Park, his exabit was closed when everyone in New York City visited the Zoo to mourn their loss of the 10 Animals (Alex being one of them) after hearing that the cargo ship, along with 6 shipping crates containing the 10 Animals (Alex included), was reported missing. after Alex along with his friends was tranquilized by Captain Dubois and her men The Lion Habitat was Reopened, albeit very short after Dubois was tranquilized by Mort, along with a Circus Show in the Central Park Zoo. when The Lemurs King Julien, Maurice and Mort joined the Central Park Zoo, his pen became the lemur habitat, although, in the first episode of The Penguins of Madagascar (Second Episode if you want to count Madagascar Penguins: A Christmas Caper) the lion exabit was shown to be changed to the kangaroo pen, where Joey the red kangaroo resided.

Zebra/Llama Pen

Next to the lion pen was the zebra pen, in which Marty the Grant's zebra Penguins of Madagascar resided. The zebra pen was sealed off by a low brick wall and iron fences, and contained a treadmill for Marty, which faced a mosaic mural of wildlife in Africa that Marty would view constantly. The zebra pen was covered with grass and had a water trough and a section of cement floor onto which keepers placed bales of hay. The zebra pen was situated facing the Reptile House, the residents of which thoroughly disliked Alex and Marty speaking too loudly. After Marty was shipped out of Central Park, his exabit was opening when everyone in New York City visited the Zoo to mourn their loss of the 10 Animals (Marty being one of them) after hearing that the the cargo ship, along with 6 shipping crates containing the 10 Animals (Marty included), was reported missing. after Marty along with his friends was tranquilized by Captain Dubois and her men the Zebra Habitat was Reopened, albeit very short after Dubois was tranquilized by Mort, along with a Circus Show in the Central Park Zoo. not much is known about what happen to the zebra habitat, but what we do know is that his pen became the llama pen, where an unseen llama resides in.

Hippopotamus/Gazelle Pen

The hippopotamus pen was close to both the lion and zebra pens, and housed Gloria the hippo. The hippopotamus pen was built with a pool of clear, chlorinated water, which Gloria would enjoy swimming in, as well as an underground section through which zoo patrons could see Gloria swimming from behind a glass wall. Surrounding the pool of water was a bare concrete floor, and flowers near the right of the pen. After Gloria was shipped out of Central Park, her exabit was closed when everyone in New York City visited the Zoo to mourn their loss of the 10 Animals (Gloria being one of them) after hearing that the cargo ship, along with 6 shipping crates containing the 10 Animals (Gloria included), was reported missing. after Gloria along with her friends was tranquilized by Captain Dubois and her men the Hippopotamus Habitat was Reopened, albeit very short after Dubois was tranquilized by Mort, along with a Circus Show in the Central Park Zoo. not much is known about what happen to the hippopotamus habitat, but what we do know is that her pen became gazelle pen, where an unnamed and unseen Thomson's gazelle resided.

Giraffe/Koala Pen

The giraffe pen was set near the lion, zebra and hippopotamus pens and housed the reticulated giraffe Melman. Inside the enclosure was a tall brick structure with wrought-iron gates that Melman used as a restroom. Inside of the pen was an MRI machine and an operating table, as well as a sign asking zoo patrons to be quiet when near the giraffe enclosure. After Melman was shipped out of Central Park, his exabit was closed when everyone in New York City visited the Zoo to mourn their loss of the 10 Animals (Melman being one of them) after hearing that the cargo ship, along with 6 shipping crates containing the 10 Animals (Melman included), was reported missing. after Melman along with his friends was tranquilized by Captain Dubois and her men the Giraffe Habitat was Reopened, albeit very short after Dubois was tranquilized by Mort, along with a Circus Show in the Central Park Zoo. his pen remained empty until the Penguins of Madagascar episode "Night and Dazed", when it became the koala pen, where Leonard resided.

Polar Bear/Gorilla Pen

The polar bear pen was the residence of Ted the polar bear, and was situated near the zoo entrance. Fixed with a pool of cold water for the bear to swim in, the pen was painted to resemble ice and snow. Overlooking the pool of water was a single ledge that Ted would recline on when he was unhappy. At the end of the pen were three rounded doorways that were also decorated with more painted surfaces. In Penguins of Madagascar, the polar bear pen became the gorilla pen, where Bada and Bing the mountain gorillas resided, resulting in Ted being moved to the former ostrich pen.

Elephant Pen

The elephant pen was located to the side of the new polar bear pen and, as with the gorilla pen, situated near the zoo entrance. It contained two Indian elephants, Darnell and Burt among them.

Ostrich Pen(s)

The old ostrich pen was located in between the camel and elephant pens and housed two South African ostriches, Shelly among them. The bottom of the pen was, as with the camel pen, kept dry and the pen was separated from zoo patrons with a wrought-iron fence. In Penguins of Madagascar, this likely became Ted's new pen, and the new ostrich pen was located near the Children's Zoo.

Camel Pen

The camel pen was set in between the rhino and new polar bear pens and contained two bactrian camels, Nick among them (although he was portrayed in Madagascar video game as a dromedary camel). Sealed off by wrought-iron fences, the camel pen was surrounded by grass and its floor was kept dry.

Rhino Pen

The rhino pen was set to the side of the camel pen and was the residence of Reggie and Roy, the two white rhinoceroses.

Alligator Pen

The alligator pen was the residence of Roger the American alligator, and was situated near the hippo and zebra pens. It contained a large pool, some rocks and a bald cypress.

Baboon Pen

The baboon pen was located to the side of the new ostrich pen and housed three olive baboons, Darla among them.

Penguin/Octopus Pool

The penguin enclosure was set at the middle of the zoo and housed the four penguins Skipper, Private, Rico and Kowalski. Divided from patrons with the use of a short brick wall and wrought-iron fencing, the penguin enclosure consisted of a pool of cold water and a small cement island in its center. Within the island, the penguins resided, its interior being empty... or is it. inside the interior relies a secret underground headquarters containing a lot of the penguin's secret weapons in an emergency room, a laboratory to test on scientific and inventive gadgets, a secret exit hatch that leads to the tunnels of the zoo's subway terminals and city's subway stations, and a elevator that has 13 floors each. not only that, but the headquarters is also a living room, with a TV Station near the front of the living room, 3 windows reflecting a submarine, a kitchen table near the center of the living room, a refrigerator near the Stuffed Fish where the exit tunnel is located, and four beds for the Penguins to sleep on.

It started out as an octopus pool, which is where the giant Pacific octopus Dave used to live in. It was where Dave performed his tricks. Also, it was the only known exhibit featuring marine animals (excluding the penguins). The pool has lots of coral, and rocks. When the Penguins Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and Private arrived an iceberg that they're on was placed in the center of the octopus pool, the iceberg was replaced with a cement island and the cement floors covered the octopus pool, thus the octopus pool was later replaced by the penguin pool.

Cages

At one point, when Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman were still at the zoo, four metal cages were found in the Central Park Zoo, all cornering the penguin exhibit. The cages contained the chimpanzees Mason and Phil for a time, at least two toucans, nine macaws and an unidentified species, presumably a bonobo, respectively. All four cages contained dried trees onto which the animals inside resided.

Some time later, once the lemurs were introduced into the zoo, the cages were taken down and replaced with wide, open enclosures in which the chimps, lemurs, flamingos and Marlene the otter were kept.

Chimpanzee Cage/Pen

The chimpanzee cage housed the two chimps Mason and Phil, and was fitted with a large tree for the chimps to climb on. At least during the colder months, the chimpanzee cage was fitted with a furnace for the chimps to keep warm. The chimpanzee cage was set near a trashcan that Mason would dig out of for food and the comics section of the newspaper. The cage was also usually littered with empty cans of root beer that Phil had drunk. In "Penguins of Madagascar", the chimps' cage became a wide, open chimpanzee pen for them to roam freely in. As well as Mason and Phil, it was also home to Lulu in the episode "Monkey Love".

Macaw Cage/Flamingo Pen

The macaw cage contained nine blue-and-yellow macaws, and was fitted with a tree that the macaws would perch on. To house the birds at night, the cage contained a large birdhouse set on one of the tree’s branches. It was later replaced by the flamingo pen, home to a small flock of greater flamingos, Pinky among them.

Toucan Cage/Lemur Pen(???)

The toucan cage housed at least two unnamed keel-billed toucans, and one toucan among others, and had a tree inside that the toucans used as a perch. As with the macaw cage, the toucan cage contained a large birdhouse. in the Nintendo GameCube/PlayStation 2/Xbox Version of [Madagascar (2005 Video Game)] , Marty and Skipper encountered a toucan, who said that he was often teased for his nose, and aided Marty to escape the zoo. not much is known on what happen to the toucan cage, but It was possible that it was later replaced by the lemur pen, when the lemurs arrived at the zoo.

Bonobo(?) Cage/Otter Pen

The cage in which this animal resided contained, as did the others, a large tree for them to climb on. It may have contained at least one unnamed bonobo, which looked identical to both Mason and Phil and appeared at the end of The Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper. It was later replaced by the otter pen, home to Marlene.

Hedgehog Habitat

A terrarium that has a spinning wheel

Sea Lion Habitat

A pool with hoops and a cave

Reptile House

The reptile house was host to various species of reptile and amphibian, among them snakes and lizards. Some of the reptile house tanks were set facing outside.

After the zoo’s main attractions (Alex, Marty, etc.) went missing, the zoo may have continued to operate, with at least one of its attractions, the Reptile House, remaining open. During this time, one exhibit in particular, the cobra habitat, which housed at least twenty-six cobras, was accessible for viewing by patrons.

Some time later, the Reptile House took in further animals, from a number of snakes of all species to panther chameleons from the forests of Madagascar. Among the animals that enjoyed a brief stay was the boa constrictor Savio, who was transferred to the Central Park Zoo from the Hoboken Zoo for a number of instances. One animal, a poison dart frog named Barry, was brought over to the zoo in a radioactive container out of fear of his poisonous skin, but kept in a standard glass tank afterward.

Children's Zoo

The newest addition to the Central Park Zoo, the children's zoo is home to Randy the Suffolk sheep, The Blue Hen, and the bunnies, Muffy, Buffy, and Fluffy. It was also home to the lemurs in the episode "Operation: Neighbor Swap". the interior of the Children's zoo is mainly desolate, with some trees and a few bales of hay arranged in a circle. It appears to be an expansion of the regular zoo.

It is located nearby from the alligator pen and next to the new ostrich pen.
