  • The Sets for Africa were actually made from scratch, all because after the production of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa wrapped up, someone deleted the Africa sets.
  • Alex's Birthmark from Madagascar 2 is still visible, the clearest shot of the birthmark is when Alex reveals his plan, if you zoom at Alex's right hand, you will see the African shaped birthmark.
  • At the end of this film, the filmmakers purposely made it the same time of year it was at the beginning of the first film. That way the city was just like it was before they left.
  • The island of Madagascar does not appear at all in this movie, nor is it mentioned out loud, though this is the location that DuBois and her allies are being sent to exiled at the end of the movie as seen on a box on the freighter ship.
  • Alex' response to Skipper on driving is a direct reference to general traffic jams, parking issues and the prevalence of public transport in New York City, discouraging many from ever purchasing vehicles. Immediately after, Marty makes a reference to Driving Miss Daisy.[1]
  • The official junior novelization of the movie mentions the Penguins using a giant mechanical penguin-bot to fight Dubois in the climactic final scene, which Skipper refers to as having been built in anticipation of Y2K but was never used in the end. This never actually takes place in the movie, presumably to Kowalski's chagrin.
  • The Melman and Gloria Dance Scene was Longer, with the Opening starts when Melman wanted to do Juggling, and then came up with the idea to walk on a tight rope, and also a scene where King Julien shouts "BORING" two times. This was later cut in half, and was instead starting in the aftermath of the first part of the scene.
  • Kowalski's iconic abacus makes its second appearance in the films.
  • During Captain Chantel Dubois' Introduction, The models that were used for stuffed animal heads, are reused models of animals from the previous movies and series.
  • The plane crash landed in a near-identical fashion to the second film, which Melman makes fun of.
  • Alex's birthday at the beginning of the movie is the same as Marty's in the first one. But, the wishes are different. In the first movie, Marty wishes he could go to the wild, which is the Island of Madagascar. But in the third movie, Alex wishes he could go back to New York City's Central Park Zoo.
  • When Marty apologizes to his friends of abandoning the zoo, it also came from the first movie by the argument.
  • When Alex is talking about a ‘French-Canadian circus‘, he’s referencing the real-life Cirque du Soleil.
  • Vitaly's Line where he says that the Circus make good family quality entertainment only to be mocked by Stefano was a slight nod towards Disney, which is known for making decades-worth of family-friendly entertainment, but has gotten boring and stale in recent times.
  • This is the first time in the movies Julien saved the day (not counting the original movie when he and Maurice stopped Alex from going berserk and nearly eating/hurting Marty).
  • The fate of DuBois and her men echo those of the animals in the first film with the freighter shipping them to Madagascar in the end.
  • Zuba and Florrie were originally supposed to appear, but they were cut in the final version. If they had appeared, Sherri Shepherd would have reprised her role as Florrie and Samuel L. Jackson would've replaced Bernie Mac (due to his death) for Zuba.
  • In the shot of New York's skyline shown in the scene where the animals return to the zoo, the new World Trade Center towers are visible. However, the complex was not incomplete by the release of the film, with the completion of the World Trade Center being built the day after Madagascar 3's US Release. This Makes Rico's love of violent explosions is shown in this film to be on the same level as in The Penguins of Madagascar TV series. Not only does he set up things like the cannon filled with TNT, and the rocket shoes for the dogs, but right after Stefano is first fired out of his cannon, Rico is seen cuddling a stick of TNT affectionately.
  • At least three out of four of the penguins cheat at cards - Skipper, Kowalski and Private all have four Aces in their hand, but we don't see Rico's hand.
  • This is the second time in the franchise where Gloria gets stuck due to her fat butt (going through the pipes in the opening). The first time was in the plane door in the beginning of the second film.
  • The movie was the highest grossing movie during the summer time of 2012, being tied against the other highest grossing movie of that same season, Marvel's The Avengers. It is also the only Madagascar Movie to be the highest grossing movie at the Box Office.
  • The movie was nominated for "Favorite Animated Movie" at the 2013 Kids' Choice Awards, but lost to Disney's Wreck-It Ralph.
  • In the opening scene, the same music from Madagascar 2 begins to play.
